Family or friends helping with the home search???

Back to Blog

Looking for a home can be a very detailed and time-consuming process. I have watched some of those shows on T.V. and they are not far off.
Getting help with your house-hunting is why you get a Realtor like me involved. Family and friends can also be of assistance in giving advice and in the case of family, sometimes it's financial assistance too.

I find their are a few items to keep in mind. What you may be looking for in a home and what friends/family are looking for can be two totally different ideas.

1. Try to make sure that anyone who is assisting you accompanies you when you are looking at homes. It is very difficult if you wait to involve them until you find the "one". I've seen it quite often, that there is disagreement on the home.

2. They should also be there to see the other homes you have Not chosen, so they can see and discuss the merits and short-comings of the homes you did not choose. They also need to see what homes are asking what prices. Without that knowledge, they are uninformed about the market.

3. Discuss with family in advance how much they will be willing to assist you, in regards to financing. You (and I) need to know this so you can look in the correct price-range, and to be able to structure an offer that gives you the best chance of getting your home for the best price.

It can be a great moral and sometimes a financial boost to have family and friends help with your home search. Just keep in mind these few tips and it will make for a better home buying experience.

Please give me a call or an email if you have any questions or would like my help to find a home. Also, please feel free to comment on this blog entry. Enjoy your summer.
